Sy-Fy's "The Phantom" Trailer Online

Lee Falk's classic character, The Phantom, is one of the latest characters to get the "reimagining" treatment compliments of Sy-Fy (still feel silly typing that). A new trailer for the series has gone online and I encourage you to check it out:

Now, as a fan of The Phantom, I don't think it looks too terrible. Some of the acting and dialogue seems a little stilted, but leagues better than most of what Sy-Fy fills it's movies with. The action looks solid, and I kind of dig the whole idea of a young man finding out he's a Walker. The bad guys look appropriately over the top without venturing into silly and the trappings of The Phantom mythology all seem to be in place. Well, almost all the trappings...

The new costume looks like shit. Sorry, but it does. I'm guessing with all the new technology in the 21st Century Phantom lair, there just wasn't any room for mirrors so the main character could see how much of an asshole he looks like. Seriously, he had a problem wearing that sweet looking classic outfit but whatever that is he's wearing now is cool? Come on. The trailer gives a passing glimpse at how awesome you could make the original suit, but nope, we're going with the crappy Rise of Cobra-esque accelerator suit. Why can't the new kid's Watcher (or whatever the hell they're going to call him in the show) have said "Look, punk. If it was good enough for 21 Kit Walker's, it's good enough for number 22."

Fans of the classics; thoughts?

As a die-hard PHANTOM fan, I'll watch the miniseries / pilot, but I'm skeptical. I really, really, really WANT it to work, but I don't have a lot of faith in SyFy.

Oh, and the costume is ass on a plate ... without the plate.
